The "hand of hope" image is not of abortion, but of fetal surgery in utero. The caption to the image is an urban legend that has been circulating since 2003. Both the fetus being operated on for spina bifida, and its mother, were anesthetized at the time of the photo. Neither, in other words, could move. The fetus's hand fell out during surgery, and the doctor, according to his own testimony as reported in USA Today, tucked it back in. This accurate description for the photo also accompanied news reports of the event.
